Welcome to the third edition of Fun Random Sports Facts! For this edition, I decided to focus on something closer to home: South Florida sports.

South Florida has one of the most unique sports landscapes in the country, with championship teams, legendary players, unforgettable moments, and plenty of random facts that even some longtime fans might not know.

Florida/Miami Marlins

Two World Series Titles Without a Division Championship

The Marlins have won two World Series championships, in 1997 and 2003, but have never won their division. Both championship teams made the postseason as Wild Card teams.

Last Team to Hit for the Cycle

The Marlins were the final MLB franchise to have a player hit for the cycle for the first time in team history. Luis Arraez accomplished the feat on April 11, 2023, over 30 years after the franchise began.

Oddly enough, after waiting three decades for their first cycle, the Marlins didn't have to wait long for their second. Xavier Edwards hit for the cycle on July 28, 2024, just over a year later.

The Tallest Mascot in Baseball

Billy the Marlin is the tallest mascot in Major League Baseball, standing at eight feet tall.

Kim Ng Made MLB History

In 2020, the Marlins made history by hiring Kim Ng as general manager, making her the first woman to serve as a general manager in Major League Baseball.

Only One MVP and One Cy Young Winner

The Marlins have had only one player win the National League MVP and one player win the National League Cy Young Award while representing the franchise.

Giancarlo Stanton won NL MVP in 2017, while Sandy Alcantara won the NL Cy Young Award in 2022.

Miami Heat

Bam Adebayo's Historic Scoring Performance

Bam Adebayo sits second all-time in points scored in a single game in Miami Heat history after scoring 83 points against the Washington Wizards on March 10, 2026.

Udonis Haslem's Hometown Loyalty

Udonis Haslem went undrafted and spent his entire 20-year NBA career with the Miami Heat, a level of loyalty that has become increasingly rare in professional sports.

His 20 seasons with one franchise are tied for the second-longest by a player who spent his entire NBA career with the same team. From going undrafted to becoming a three-time NBA champion and franchise icon, Haslem's career is one of the greatest examples of loyalty in modern sports.

The Historic 27-Game Winning Streak

The 2012-13 Miami Heat hold the second-longest winning streak within a single NBA season, winning 27 consecutive games.

If winning streaks that carry over between seasons are included, the Heat's streak ranks third all-time. The only team with a longer single-season streak remains the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers, who won 33 consecutive games.

An Unlikely Trip to the NBA Finals

In 2023, the Heat became just the second No. 8 seed in NBA history to reach the NBA Finals, joining the 1999 New York Knicks.

Miami's run was especially memorable because the team had to survive the Play-In Tournament just to make the playoffs before making an improbable run all the way to the Finals.

Retiring Michael Jordan's Jersey

The Miami Heat are the only NBA franchise in which Michael Jordan never played for to retire his No. 23 jersey.

The Heat retired the number in 2003 as a tribute to Jordan's impact on basketball and the NBA.

Miami Dolphins

The Only Perfect Season in NFL History

This is probably the most famous South Florida sports fact of all time. The 1972 Miami Dolphins remain the only team in NFL history to complete an entire season undefeated, finishing with a perfect 17-0 record and winning Super Bowl VII.

More than 50 years later, no other NFL team has managed to accomplish the same feat.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Legendary Dolphins running backs Larry Csonka and Jim Kiick were famously nicknamed "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid."

The duo became one of the most recognizable backfields in NFL history and played a major role in the Dolphins' championship success during the early 1970s.

Nick Saban's Only NFL Head Coaching Job

Before becoming one of the greatest college football coaches of all time, Nick Saban spent two seasons as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2005 and 2006.

Those two years remain Saban's only experience as an NFL head coach.

Greg Camarillo Saved the Dolphins From an 0-16 Season

The 2007 Dolphins endured one of the worst seasons in franchise history, finishing 1-15.

Their lone victory came against the Baltimore Ravens when Greg Camarillo caught the game-winning touchdown pass in overtime, preventing Miami from becoming the first team in NFL history to finish a 16-game season 0-16.

Don Shula Is the Winningest Coach in NFL History

Don Shula coached the Miami Dolphins from 1970 through 1995 and remains the winningest head coach in NFL history with 347 career victories.

He led the Dolphins to back-to-back Super Bowl championships following the 1972 and 1973 seasons, including the legendary undefeated 1972 campaign.

Florida Panthers

The Origin of the Rat Trick

One of the most unique traditions in professional sports began with a rat.

Before the Panthers' home opener on October 8, 1995, Scott Mellanby killed a rat in the locker room using his hockey stick. Mellanby then went on to score two goals in the game, leading to the nickname "Rat Trick."

Throughout the 1995-96 season, Panthers fans began throwing plastic rats onto the ice after goals. The Panthers went on to reach the 1996 Stanley Cup Final before being swept by the Colorado Avalanche.

Although the NHL eventually banned fans from throwing rats after goals because of game delays, Panthers fans continued the tradition by throwing them onto the ice after victories. It remains one of the most recognizable traditions in South Florida sports today.

The Longest Shootout in NHL History

During a 2-1 victory over the Washington Capitals, the Panthers were part of the longest shootout in NHL history, lasting an incredible 20 rounds.

Jaromir Jagr Climbs the All-Time Scoring List

On December 22, 2016, Jaromir Jagr recorded an assist in a 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins, giving him 1,888 career points and moving him into second place on the NHL's all-time scoring list.

Jagr eventually finished his NHL career with 1,921 points, trailing only Wayne Gretzky.

Roberto Luongo Reaches 1,000 Games

On April 5, 2018, Roberto Luongo became just the third goaltender in NHL history to play 1,000 games.

He joined Hall of Famers Martin Brodeur and Patrick Roy in the exclusive club and finished his career with 1,044 games played.

Luongo Passes a Panthers Legend

On February 25, 2019, Roberto Luongo earned his 485th career victory in a 4-3 overtime win over the Colorado Avalanche.

The victory moved Luongo past Hockey Hall of Famer and former Panther Ed Belfour for what was then third place on the NHL's all-time goaltender wins list. He currently ranks fourth all-time among NHL goaltenders in career wins.

Inter Miami

The Only MLS Team With a Spanish Name

Inter Miami's full name is Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami, making it the only Major League Soccer team with a Spanish name.

Considering Miami's strong Hispanic and Latin American culture, the name is a fitting representation of the city.

Lionel Messi Is the Club's All-Time Leading Goal Scorer

Lionel Messi is Inter Miami's all-time leading goal scorer with 98 goals.

Since arriving in Miami, Messi has completely transformed the franchise both on and off the field.

The Most-Followed Team in MLS

Inter Miami is the most-followed team in Major League Soccer, with more than 30 million combined followers across its social media platforms.

The arrival of Lionel Messi played a massive role in turning the club into one of the most recognizable soccer teams in the world.

The Most Valuable Team in MLS

Inter Miami CF is the highest-valued franchise in Major League Soccer, with an estimated value of $1.45 billion.

For a relatively young franchise, the club's growth both financially and globally has been remarkable.

The Meaning Behind the Logo

The two large birds featured on Inter Miami's logo are great herons. Their intersecting legs form the letter "M" as a tribute to Miami.

It's a small detail that many people may not notice at first, but it adds another layer of meaning to one of the most recognizable logos in MLS.

More Than Just Sunshine and Sports

South Florida sports have given fans no shortage of memorable moments, legendary athletes, championships, and bizarre pieces of trivia over the years. From the Dolphins' perfect season and the Marlins' unlikely World Series runs to the Heat's historic streak, the Panthers' rats, and Inter Miami's rapid rise into a global brand, there is plenty of sports history packed into one region.
