Old School vs. New School: Why Baseball Needs Both

Old school versus new school. It's one of the biggest debates among baseball fans and one that probably will never end.


Old-school baseball relies on scouting, experience, gut instinct, and "small ball" tactics like bunting, stealing bases, and manufacturing runs. New-school baseball is built around sabermetrics, advanced analytics, and data-driven decision-making.


Even though I'm 26 years old and grew up in baseball's analytical era, I don't believe either philosophy is superior on its own. In my opinion, the most successful teams are the ones that combine the best of both worlds.


Analytics provide valuable information, but baseball isn't played on a spreadsheet. Managers still must trust what they see, understand their players, and make decisions based on the moment. That's why I believe the best organizations use analytics as a guide—not as the final answer.


The Analytics I Value Most


There are thousands of baseball statistics available today, but there are a handful that I believe truly help determine how valuable a player is and how successful a team can become.


On-Base Percentage (OBP)


If I could build a lineup around one offensive statistic, it would be on-base percentage.


It doesn't matter whether a player reaches base with a hit, a walk, or getting hit by a pitch. What matters is getting on base because every baserunner increases a team's chances of scoring and, ultimately, winning games.


The 2002 Oakland Athletics became famous for embracing that philosophy. They were one of the first organizations to fully embrace sabermetrics by targeting players who consistently got on base, even if they weren't traditional superstars. As the movie Moneyball famously says, "He gets on base."


When building a roster, I'd want at least one or two players with elite on-base skills. Those players often don't receive the same recognition as power hitters, making them more affordable while still providing tremendous value.


Wins Above Replacement (WAR)


Wins Above Replacement, better known as WAR, is one of the most useful all-around statistics in baseball.


WAR estimates how many more wins a player provides compared to a replacement-level player, such as someone who could easily be called up from Triple-A. Unlike traditional statistics, WAR attempts to measure a player's complete value by combining offense, defense, and baserunning while also adjusting for positional difficulty.


Generally speaking:

  • 0 WAR or below is replacement level.

  • Around 2 WAR is an average major leaguer.

  • 4-5 WAR is typically All-Star caliber.

  • 6+ WAR is usually MVP-level production.


WAR gives me one of the clearest pictures of a player's overall impact. It's one of the first numbers I'd look at when comparing players, evaluating trades, or deciding whether someone deserves an everyday role.


OPS+


OPS+ is another statistic I value because it provides important context that traditional offensive numbers often miss.


While regular OPS combines on-base percentage and slugging percentage, OPS+ adjusts for ballpark effects and the offensive environment of a player's era. A score of 100 represents league average, and every point above or below 100 equals one percentage point better or worse than league average.


That adjustment is what makes OPS+ so valuable. A hitter putting up strong numbers in a pitcher-friendly ballpark deserves more credit than someone producing similar statistics in a hitter's paradise.


Instead of simply asking whether a player had a good season, OPS+ helps answer how good that season really was compared to everyone else who played under different circumstances. That's why I value it more than traditional OPS.


ERA+


For pitchers, ERA+ serves the same purpose.


ERA+ adjusts a pitcher's ERA to account for league scoring environments and ballpark factors. Like OPS+, 100 represents league average, with every point above 100 indicating better-than-average performance.


A pitcher working half his games at Coors Field, a hitter-friendly ballpark, faces a much different challenge than one pitching in a park that's much friendlier to pitchers. Regular ERA doesn't account for those differences, but ERA+ does.


That's why I believe ERA+ is one of the best ways to compare pitchers across different teams and eras. It provides a much more complete picture of how dominant a pitcher actually was.


Baseball Isn't Played on a Spreadsheet


As much as I appreciate analytics, they aren't everything.


One thing numbers can't measure is a manager's feel for the game.


Every manager eventually faces the same difficult decision: a starting pitcher has dominated for most of the game but suddenly runs into trouble. Do you trust the numbers and go to the bullpen, or do you trust your ace to work through it?


That's where experience and instinct become just as important as analytics.


One example that always comes to mind is Game 4 of the 2021 American League Championship Series. Houston Astros former manager Dusty Baker visited veteran starting pitcher Zack Greinke on the mound during the sixth inning after Greinke had gotten himself into trouble.


Instead of immediately pulling him, Baker calmed Greinke down, trusted his veteran pitcher, and let him finish the inning. Greinke escaped a bases-loaded jam without allowing a run, preserving Houston's lead and giving his team and himself exactly what they needed: confidence.


Analytics may have suggested making a pitching change, but Baker trusted the pitcher standing in front of him. His gut feeling proved to be the right call.


Another example came during a Miami Marlins game in June 2022.


Sandy Alcantara was one out away from finishing another complete game when he allowed a walk and a single in the ninth inning, putting the tying runs on base. Former Marlins manager Don Mattingly walked to the mound intending to remove him.


Alcantara wasn't ready to come out.


After a brief conversation, Mattingly trusted his ace and walked back to the dugout. Two pitches later, the Marlins turned a game-ending double play to secure the victory.


Sometimes analytics say it's time to make a change, and sometimes your pitcher convinces you otherwise.


That's something no computer model can predict.


Team Chemistry Matters


Another factor that often gets overlooked is team chemistry.


You can build the most talented roster in baseball, but if the players don't trust one another or buy into a common goal, talent alone won't guarantee championships.


Some of baseball's greatest championship teams weren't necessarily the most talented on paper; they were simply the most connected. Every player understood their role, believed in one another, and put the team's success ahead of individual accomplishments.


Chemistry isn't something analytics can fully measure, but it's something every championship team seems to have.


Finding the Right Balance


The old-school versus new-school debate doesn't need a winner.


Analytics have made baseball smarter, while traditional scouting, experience, and gut instinct continue to shape the biggest moments in the sport.


The best managers know when to trust the numbers and when to trust the player standing on the mound. The best front offices combine advanced metrics with strong scouting. And the best teams understand that success comes from more than statistics alone.


In my opinion, the organizations that consistently win are the ones that embrace both philosophies.


The future of baseball isn't old school or new school.


It's the perfect blend of both.
