Ten Years Later: Is It Time for the Cubs to Win Another World Series?
It has been 10 years since the Chicago Cubs finally broke one of the most famous curses in sports history.
In 2016, the Cubs ended a 108-year World Series drought, defeating the Cleveland Indians in one of the most memorable World Series in MLB history.
Could 2026 be the year they win another World Series?
Pete Crow-Armstrong Has Become an MVP-Caliber Star
At the center of Chicago's success is center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong.
PCA has put together an incredible season and established himself as one of the leading candidates for National League MVP. He finished the regular season with 45 home runs and 40 stolen bases, becoming just the seventh player in MLB history to join the 40/40 club.
His 45 home runs were also tied for the most in Major League Baseball.
Crow-Armstrong also finished with 107 RBIs and 119 runs scored, while playing in all 162 games and accumulating 726 plate appearances.
His production went far beyond home runs and stolen bases. PCA finished among the league leaders in several major offensive categories, including 357 total bases, a .570 slugging percentage, a .943 OPS, a 156 OPS+, a .407 rOBA, a 153 Rbat+, and 9.8 WAR.
For a player who has developed into one of the game's most exciting young stars, this season has been a huge statement.
If the Cubs are going to make a deep postseason run, they'll need their superstar center fielder to continue playing at that level.
The Cubs Hot Bats and Hot Hands
Of course, Chicago is far from a one-player team.
The Cubs finished the regular season as the National League's first Wild Card team with an 87-69 record, earning themselves a spot in the postseason.
Crow-Armstrong has received much of the attention, but the lineup is filled with players capable of making an impact. Chicago has a talented group that includes Alex Bregman, Dansby Swanson, Seiya Suzuki, Ian Happ, Michael Busch, Nico Hoerner, Michael Conforto, and Carson Kelly, among others.
The pitching staff also gives the Cubs plenty to work with, featuring arms such as Shota Imanaga and Matthew Boyd.
That combination of offensive talent and pitching depth is what makes this team so intriguing heading into October.
There was a scare during the final week of the regular season when Bregman suffered a facial fracture after being hit by a foul ball off Busch's bat. However, he is expected to return for the playoffs.
Can the Cubs Put It All Together in October?
The regular season is one thing. The postseason is another.
The Cubs have the talent, but now they must prove that all of those pieces can come together when the pressure is at its highest.
If the pitching staff can perform consistently, the lineup continues producing, and the team's stars stay healthy, Chicago has the potential to be a serious threat in October.
Baseball can be unpredictable, especially in the postseason. One hot stretch from a lineup or one dominant pitching performance can completely change a series.
That's why the Cubs don't need every player to be perfect. They simply need their biggest stars to perform when it matters most.
Ten Years Later, Could History Repeat Itself?
This is what makes the timing of this Cubs team so interesting.
Ten years ago, Chicago finally ended the Billy Goat Curse and won its first World Series since 1908. It was one of the most unforgettable moments in baseball history and a championship that generations of Cubs fans had waited their entire lives to see.
Now, a decade later, the Cubs have another chance to win it all.
What a story it would be if Chicago could capture another World Series championship exactly 10 years after ending its historic 108-year drought.
The curse may have been broken a long time ago, but another championship could make 2026 another unforgettable year in Cubs history.
